IPMAT Syllabus 2027: Quant, Verbal and Reasoning

No IIM publishes an official IPMAT syllabus. Here is what the tests cover, based on the section structure in the official notices and the kinds of questions seen in past papers, organised the way you should study it.

Because there is no official syllabus, the lists below describe the topics that have commonly appeared. Question counts and the mix of topics change from year to year.

Quantitative Ability

Mostly Class 9–10 maths, with some Class 11–12 algebra. Speed and accuracy matter as much as the concepts.

Arithmetic

Percentages · Profit, loss and discount · Simple and compound interest · Ratio and proportion · Averages · Mixtures and alligations · Time and work · Time, speed and distance

Numbers

Number system · Divisibility and remainders · HCF and LCM · Factors · Units digit and number patterns

Algebra

Linear and quadratic equations · Inequalities and modulus · Functions and graphs · Logarithms · Sequences and series (AP, GP)

Class 11–12 topics

Permutations and combinations · Probability · Sets · Matrices and determinants

Geometry

Lines, triangles and circles · Polygons · Mensuration (areas and volumes) · Coordinate geometry · Basic trigonometry

IPMAT Indore's short-answer section has no options to check against, so you need to reach exact answers; it has no negative marking.

Verbal Ability and Reading

Verbal carries 50% of IIM Indore's aptitude score, and it appears in all three exams.

Reading comprehension

How much of this is in your board syllabus?

If you take Maths in Class 11 and 12, topics like sequences, permutations and combinations, probability, sets, matrices and logarithms overlap with IPMAT. Arithmetic, reasoning and verbal skills are not taught at school in the IPMAT format and need separate practice.

Maths in Class 12 is not required for IPMAT Indore or IPMAT Rohtak under their 2026 rules. It is required if you also want to use your score for IIM Shillong.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official IPMAT syllabus?
No. IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak and the NTA publish the sections and marking scheme, not a topic-by-topic syllabus. Topic lists like the one above are built from past papers.
Is Class 11–12 maths needed for IPMAT?
Most questions use Class 9–10 maths, but some Class 11–12 topics (permutations and combinations, probability, sequences, matrices, logarithms) have appeared, especially in IPMAT Indore's short-answer section.
Can a commerce or arts student cover the quant syllabus?
Yes. The quant is mostly school-level maths applied quickly. Students without Class 12 Maths usually need extra time on algebra and the Class 11–12 topics, so start early.
Is the syllabus the same for IPMAT Indore and Rohtak?
The quant and verbal topics overlap heavily. The differences are in structure: Indore has a short-answer quant section and no reasoning section; Rohtak has a separate Logical Reasoning section and a single 120-minute limit.
